COLLABORATIVE RELATIONSHIPS: Nursing and nutrition personnel, Physicians, Social Workers, Pharmacists, Occupational and Physical Therapists, Residents/Fellow, patients and families


PURPOSE OF POSITION: To provide and coordinate services for lactating mother-infant dyad. Oversee the human milk initiative of the medical center.

·Compliance - Patient Services Staff
Sustain a working understanding of regulatory requirements and accreditation standards. Support leadership in Compliance efforts to meet and sustain the regulatory compliance efforts of the department and hospital. Be mindful and judicious in monitoring safety and departmental policies and procedures. Ensure all individual certifications and Safety College requirements are fulfilled in a timely basis. Work with department managers, nurse council and magnet representatives to identify and share safety best practices. Be mindful of CCHMCs processes and compliance with CMS standards and freely communicate safety and compliance concerns to leadership team members.
·Interprofessional Practice:
Demonstrates consistent integration of the Interprofessional Practice Model (IPM) in all aspects of practice.
·Patient Care - Age Specific and Culturally Diverse
Consistently integrates age specific and culturally diverse concepts into patient care, taking into consideration both the patient's chronological age and developmental functioning.
·Clinical Care
Provide lactation services for the inpatient mother-infant dyad and for community referrals. Coordinate a triaged support system for lactation assessments with nursing and dietetic staff. Ensure the exchange of appropriate patient care and clinical information when patients are admitted, referred, transferred or discharged. Documents appropriate information in the electronic medical record. Develop, update and implement standards of patient care applicable to mother-infant dyad. Ensure standards of care are consistent with current evidence based practice. Provide guidance, information and resources to mothers and staff who call the Warm Line. Schedules appointments as needed in the outpatient Center for Breastfeeding Medicine clinic. Collaborates with multidisciplinary health professionals, including Lactation Committees at CCHMC, in the community and throughout the country. Maintains on-call support for consultation on complex cases during holidays and Sundays. Embraces research opportunities within the medical center and the community
Educates staff on lactation policies and procedures as needed. Develops lactation education material for staff and mother-infant dyad. Provides lactation education to Residents, Nurses, Dietitians, other health care professionals and the community. Precepts students and health care professionals as assigned. Develop skill competencies and training for all appropriate personnel to include basic through advanced assessment skills and interventions.
·Data Management
Assists in maintaining program statistics.
·Professional Responsibility
Serves as an expert resource for medical center policies pertaining to human milk i.e. collection, handling and storage of breast milk. Recommends new and upgraded equipment and technology for lactation and human milk. Actively pursues own individual learning needs and development.
Cooperates with coworkers to complete daily patient care responsibilities. Partners with coworkers and health care professionals to provide valuable input on projects and takes ownership of project(s) as assigned.

·Bachelor of Science in Health Care related discipline
·Associate of Nursing OR related discipline
·Current License to practice in the State of Ohio
·Certified as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC)
·2 years of clinical pediatric experience AND Experience as a lactation consultant for full term and preterm infants
