CLINICAL PROG MGR, Pastoral Care Research

DEPARTMENT: Pastoral Care
PURPOSE OF POSITION: To provide clinical and administrative leadership for programs within the Department of Pastoral Care.


  • Accreditation and Regulatory Compliance
    Sustain a working understanding of regulatory requirements and accreditation standards for programs being managed. Be mindful of CCHMCs processes and compliance with CMS standards and freely communicate safety and compliance concerns to leadership team members.

• Program Management

Develop, implement, maintain and monitor comprehensive program and project plans. Provides related support and education to CCHMC's patients, families, and staff.
Education: recruit appropriate students; manage students; lead education program including providing orientation, appropriate curriculum, supervision of students; leadership of mentors; guidance of Professional Advisory Committee; writing student evaluations in a timely manner.
Research: develop and conduct research projects in keeping with the vision of department leadership; manage students and staff; ensure compliance with the IRB; develop research teams for individual projects; guide teams through to the completion of research projects, including leading the process of manuscript writing and publication.

• Professional Development

Maintains current regarding the research, literature and benchmarking data which addresses professional and leadership development, and/or patient and family education. Networks with colleagues on a regular basis. Contributes to this body of knowledge through attendance and participation as a subject matter expert and leader at seminars, training sessions and on committees and boards. Attends conferences and meetings as appropriate. Attends at least one professional conference yearly. Submits proposals for presentations at national and/or international conferences. Active member in at least one professional organization.

• Staff Management

Manage the selection, development, motivation, appraisal and discipline of reporting personnel. Provide supervision of assigned staff for carrying out department goals and objectives and medical center mission and values. Prepare and present annual performance evaluations. Make job requirements and goals for each position clear to employees and provide sufficient training to achieve the desired level of competency; document evidence of competence on an annual basis. Ensure that orientation and in-service training and continuing education are provided to achieve the desired level of performance. Maintain accurate records of time worked by staff and ensure appropriate coverage as required by the department.



  • Master's Degree in area relevant to Pastoral Care program being managed.
  • 5 years clinical experience with bereavement and/or spiritual care in health care
  • 3 years leadership in spiritual and/or bereavement program development and management
  • 2 years leadership experience in spiritual and/or bereavement education and research in an academic medical center
  • Certification as an ACPE Educator (for Education) or Advanced Education in Chaplaincy and/or Bereavement Research (for Research) relevant to Pastoral Care program being managed.

Ability to help professional colleagues apply relevant research to clinical practice. Ability to guide a research project to completion, including publication of research study in a peer reviewed journal.
