Analyst Bioinformatics - Human Genetics


Dr. Matthew Hestand ( is seeking to add a bioinformatician to his team supporting the diagnostic labs and translational research within the Division of Human Genetics at the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. • Informatics Operations: Maintain and use existing pipelines, websites, software and/or databases for the Division of Human Genetics' diagnostic labs. This includes, but is not limited to, tools that support cytogenetic and molecular tests, including next-generation sequencing (e.g. Gene Panels, Exomes Slices, Whole Exomes, and Genomes).

• Support: Manages computer hardware and software for laboratory staff. Trains and supports staff, residents, fellows, technologists, and clients on laboratory supported pipelines, websites, software and databases.

• Applications Development: Assist in the improvement and development of new clinical pipelines, websites, software and/or databases.

• Research projects: Perform analyses and assist in manuscript preparations.


• Bachelor's degree in Biology, Informatics, or Computer Sciences AND 1 year related experience OR
• Master's degree in Bioinformatics, Informatics, Computational Biology, or Computer Science

• Proficient in at least one scripting programming language (e.g. Python, Perl and/or R)
• Proficient in Windows and Unix/Linux environments
• Familiar with relational databases

• Proficient in Python, Linux cluster environments, and MySQL/Oracle databases
• Experience with Next Generation Sequence Data analysis (such as BWA/GATK), Molecular Biology, Genetics, and Genomics
• In addition, previous work experience with cloud computing, R statistical language, PHP, Javascript, Ajax, shell scripting, and machine learning will be looked upon favorably
• Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate with diverse personnel at all levels of the organization
