PURPOSE OF POSITION: Provide day to day support of the Linux systems with little supervision. Provide project support and implementation with the ability to manage projects of low to medium complexity.


Linux System Support

Plan, design, implement, and maintain complex Linux and Unix system environments including High Availability and High Performance cluster solutions. Plan for server resource continuity in the event of a disaster. Ensure that Linux environments are recoverable and secure. Plan for and monitor the capacity of the Linux system environments. Monitor server and operating system performance; provide analysis and solutions to performance issues. Plan and execute change within the systems by following the policies and procedures as defined by Research IT. Proactively identify potential issues and conceptualize their solutions while providing direct technical support and problem resolution assistance for all Linux and Unix system environments.

Production Support

Provide direct technical support for production and process issues. Troubleshoot and decipher error messages. Identify required resources to resolve issues. Utilize appropriate Change Control methods to implement system solutions. Be proactive in the identification of potential issues and conceptualizing solutions. Serve as a resource person for and as a liaison between Cincinnati Children's departments and Research IT. Support departmental efforts to improve customer satisfaction. Evaluate and monitor system performance and functionality to avoid potential issues as well as gather information for future development needs or feasibility studies.

Project Management

Manage the design, development, and implementation of new and enhanced projects. Identify the appropriate resources needed to complete projects. Communicate between internal and external parties on project related issues and developments. Develop and manage project plans. Work with cross functional teams. Consult with end user community to develop requirements for system solutions. Prioritize a medium number of projects. Plan supporting efforts for departmental projects.


Develop and maintain positive relationships, both internal and external to CCHMC Research Foundation. Provide consultation and assistance to customers and Research IT and Information Services Personnel. Keep expertise current and engage in continuous learning. Because Research staff and faculty often require assistance with previously unencountered solutions and technology, make best effort to find creative solution if none is readily available. Participate in the interview process.

Customer Service

Ensure outstanding end-user support is provided, including ongoing monitoring of Service Level Agreements for incident management and collaboration with other areas to ensure customer-centered incident management and support. Adhere to and promote continual adoption of change management policies and procedures. Model outstanding customer service behavior, including timely and effective follow-up with customers. Always maintain CCHMC's service standards of being Courteous, Attentive, Respectful and Enthusiastic team members, and Safe (CARES). Perform other duties as assigned.

Skills & Competencies

Moderate knowledge of Linux operating systems, LAN/WAN technologies (DHCP, DNS, firewalls, static routes, VPNs), POSIX permissions, filesystem ACLs, high availability clusters, backup and recovery methods, scripting, configuration management, and general application troubleshooting and support. Project and time management skills. Diplomacy, tact, and a professional demeanor. Ability to handle multiple priorities, projects, or tasks simultaneously. Good verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to relate to people of diverse demographic backgrounds. Ability to work with or without supervision and provide assistance to other analysts; to apply theories, concepts, principles and techniques to handle a broad range of tasks and situations; to exercise own judgment within the parameters of defined policies, procedures and practices; to work independently; to execute tasks and initiate problem resolution; and to serve as a role model and educate others.

·Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
·2 years' directly related experience

-Bachelor's degree in related discipline
-Active Directory / LDAP integration

-NFSv3 and NFSv4 client side configuration

-SAN and multipath environments

-Virtualization with VMware ESXi

-Apache, Tomcat, and F5 load balancer configuration
