Perform log-in and accessioning according to requisition, test ordered, and information received, using laboratory LIS system and procedures. Identify requisition errors and sample inconsistencies. Communicate with appropriate staff when information is needed to successfully accession a test.
·General Genetic Techniques:
Perform DNA and RNA isolation on various sample types including blood, bone marrow, cytobrushes, amniocytes, fibroblasts and cultured cells utilizing automated and non-automated nucleic acid isolation techniques. Perform molecular genetic techniques including but not limited to viral PCR tests, quantitation of nucleic acids by spectrophotometric methods, polymerase chain reaction, restriction digestion, staining of DNA in gels and gel imaging by digital camera acquisition. Proficient at a level 3 competency in one or more cytogenetic test systems which include Fluorescent In Situ Hybridization (FISH), Chromosome Analysis, and Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP)/Comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) Analysis. Participate in research and development of new clinical genetic tests or proficiency at a level 3 competency in two or more molecular assays which include Fragile X, STR, Genotyping, End point gel analysis, BCR quantitative, and JAK2. Make judgments including the careful monitoring of each step in laboratory procedures performed, and troubleshoot problems as they occur.
·Analysis, Interpretation and Reporting:
Learn chromosome morphology and perform chromosome analysis and photography on Cytovision imaging system. Learn molecular analysis techniques to analyze test results and produce data for interpretation. Use various genetic reference materials to interpret data generated during analysis of genetic tests. Prepare test reports for review by Genetic Counselors and Directors of the Genetic Laboratories. Make judgments as to normality or abnormality of test based on analyzed data. Ability to second check molecular test systems is recommended.
·General Laboratory Duties:
Perform routine cleaning and maintenance procedures for laboratories. Assist in ordering and maintaining inventory of supplies and their storage. Ensure that work areas are organized and present a safe, accessible, effective and efficient environment for employees.
Maintenance of certification through continuing education. Work to increase overall genetics knowledge through use of laboratory and hospital Continuing Education programs, presentations, literature and meetings. Provide education to personnel and trainees (fellows and residents) through structured presentations and unstructured interactions while performing tests or resolving technical questions.
·Quality Assurance/Quality Control:
Perform routine quality control and quality assurance procedures to assure maintenance of laboratory testing standards. Procedures include recording temperatures, pH, CO2 and humidity levels, supply audits, etc
