The counselor should be able to independently perform case preparation and follow-up anticipating family and physician needs before the evaluation. Counselors should be able to collect and evaluate patient medical and family history, independently perform genetic risk assessment, demonstrate expertise with risk assessment tools, and clearly and succinctly provide risk information to patients and providers. The counselor will be able to anticipate possible testing, coordinate outside testing with ease, interpret genetic test results, and communicate results to families and healthcare professionals. It is important that the counselor provide psychosocial assessment and counseling, formulate and implement case management plan, and identify resources. The counselor must appropriately document all patient encounters. The counselor should have detailed knowledge and a clinical area of expertise. The counselor must be able to work independently, yet be able to identify when appropriate to consult with another healthcare provider. The counselor should be able to initiate and provide independent consultation to patients, families and other healthcare providers. They will initiate and independently provide clinic development, coordination or management to contribute to success within area of expertise.
The counselor will demonstrate understanding related to genetic tests and the associated disorders provided by the laboratory and develop expertise in assigned testing area. It will be important that counselor can develop and report results, including generating and reviewing reports, calling out/explaining abnormal, preliminary, or stat results, suggestions for appropriate follow-up consultations or testing. The counselor will act as a liaison for clients of the Laboratories, providing information and technical support on appropriate test use, limits/accuracy, interpretation of results, reporting and/or follow-up of abnormal results. S/He will develop and maintain clinical databases as needed. It will be important that the counselor can independently develop and present/publish educational materials related to laboratory testing, design and maintain Laboratory and product-specific websites, collaborate with a project manager or laboratory director to design and conduct test launch activities, and provide feedback from customers, national meetings, or other areas to actively contribute to the marketing and business planning for the laboratory in your area of expertise.
A genetic counselor III must have a significant leadership role within their Division or the Hospital related to clinical care, education, or other genetic counseling related activities. They should demonstrate positive leadership skills. Their leadership role should provide benefit to patients and/or CCHMC and the Division. The counselor should be able to contribute to the success of the Division and/or Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center by suggesting and/or applying process improvements in your area of expertise. This can include any number of contributions towards innovative delivery of care.
·Academic & Research Role
The genetic counselor will generate and works towards the implementation of independent research ideas/projects. S/He will collaborate in the planning of clinical or laboratory research activities including (but not limited to) case reports, registry work, clinical trials, recruiting of participants, writing or managing and IRB, and participating in research committees. They will independently perform multiple roles related to the research projects of which they are a part. The genetic counselor must contribute ongoing academic output through grant writing, publication, and/or presentation on a regional and/or national level
S/He should pursue continued learning through attending appropriate local lectures, conferences, grand rounds, and/or regional/national meetings. It is expected that the counselor will actively participate in divisional or organizational meetings which may include journal clubs, case conferences, or other meetings.

Thorough knowledge of theories and principles of human genetics, as well as broad knowledge of genetic disease. Proficient in the American Board of Genetic Counseling Practice-Based Competencies including pedigree taking, risk analysis, critical thinking skills, and basic counseling skills. Ability to teach/supervise students at the University level. Perform leadership role and capable of representing Division on a regional and/or national level.
