Cincinnati Children's is seeking an Attending Veterinarian/Director of Veterinary Services to provide strategic leadership and direction for its animal care and use program. Nationally recognized as a top pediatric hospital and biomedical research center, Cincinnati Children's is a highly collaborative environment supported by a robust research infrastructure. The division of Veterinary Services offers a number of services and educational programs, and its animal care program covers a variety of species.

The SV/Director oversees all aspects of the animal care program, including ensuring the highest standards in animal care, management of more than 100 personnel, and maintaining a safe and regulatory-compliant facility.

This is a faculty appointment in a stimulating, mission-focused organization. It is expected that the successful candidate will hold a doctorate in veterinary medicine and have Board certification and strong expertise in laboratory animal care, experience managing a large staff, a firm understanding of regulatory and accreditation bodies (e.g., USDA, AAALAC), as well as a desire to work in a collaborative academic atmosphere. Credentials and qualifications should be commensurate with a rank of Associate or full Professor.

This position is integral to the institute's mission to improve child health through innovative discovery.

Requirements and Desired Qualifications

Candidates must have a DVM or equivalent from an accredited veterinary program, be a Diplomat of the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM), and have at least 5 years of experience in a research-intensive academic environment, preferably in a leadership role (e.g., director or assistant director of veterinary services).

Excellent skills, knowledge, and ability in general laboratory animal techniques, clinical, surgical, and anesthesia techniques, and special diagnostic procedures related to the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of disease in laboratory animals in an academic environment.

Thorough knowledge of animal welfare laws and regulations, vivarium methodology, biomedical techniques for teaching and research for a variety of laboratory animal species.

Highly developed interpersonal skills to interact with a variety of stakeholders, as well as excellent oral and written communication skills and a commitment to transparency and active engagement.

Willingness to promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and a dedication to quality and excellence.

Experience in successfully managing an AAALAC-accredited animal care and use program in an academic environment is required. Experience serving AAALAC in a voluntary or professional basis would be beneficial.

Excellent managerial skills, including budget preparation and demonstrated ability to recruit, hire, manage and train new staff and an ability to motivate and retain professional staff.

A proven track record of success facilitating progressive organizational change and development within a growing organization.

A passion for the highest animal welfare standards in scientific research and education.
