PURPOSE OF POSITION: To provide direct patient care and assist healthcare team members of the Emergency Department of a Medical Center dedicated to the care of infants, children and adolescents.

Interprofessional Practice: Demonstrates consistent integration of the Interprofessional Practice Model (IPM) in all aspects of practice.

• Patient Supervision Ensures work areas are organized, safe and ready for the next activity or shift; follows imminent danger policy; has awareness of patient location, alerts nurse to changes in mental status.

• Therapeutic Relationships/Communication Demonstrates professional boundaries; has awareness of own triggers, is self-aware; approaches the patient at their level of functioning and readiness to address issues; has 1:1 interaction with a therapeutic focus; builds therapeutic relationships. Demonstrates therapeutic communication and empathy during admission, discharge and interactions with the families.

• Documentation/Communication Completes shift charting accurately and timely; documentation is linked to the patients plan of care. Completes documentation prior to the arrival of the next shift seclusions and restraint documentation is complete and accurate. Collaborates with RN to provide support and monitoring for changes in patient status; active role in safe handoff/shift report, takes notes during shift report. Participates in huddles; familiar with and utilizes Situation Awareness concepts as appropriate.

• Parent Interactions/Family Centered Care Greets families when they are present. Provides updates to parent/guardian regarding patient condition and progress, information is linked to the plan of care; refers parents to appropriate internal or external resources for information to answer questions, if unsure of boundaries consults with Charge nurse, or Manager of Support Services or a lead MHS in Psychiatry. Recognizes the effects of trauma that may impact the patient and family experience of the health care encounter.

• Environmental/Milieu Management Manages patient's room/milieu using: structure, safety, planning, participation and support; completes environmental assessment. (everything within the patients environment)

• Patient Care-Age Specific and Culturally Diverse Will develop/adapt individualized care plans based on patient need. Provides approved care to patients as delegated limited to the following: ADL's, (bathing, feeding, toileting, etc.) Vital signs including Blood Pressure, Intake and Output, Feeding, Isolation Precautions, Emergency care for patients with lines and tubes, etc.

• Crisis Intervention Supports patients in times of crisis. Demonstrates understanding of stress model of crisis and responds with active listening, crisis communication, behavior support techniques, emotional first aid and crisis co-regulation. Supports patients empathetically during violent outburst and rapidly supports patients through post-crisis recovery, including de-briefing.

• Performance/Quality Improvement Monitors service areas, plans approaches for improvement activities, design of new processes, collect and measure data, review and report performance over time, improve and redesign processes based on evaluation and reassess continuously.

Skills & Competencies
Effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills. Capable of relating to diverse age and demographic backgrounds. Knowledge of development, behaviors, group process techniques and crisis intervention techniques for infants, children and adolescents. Capable of managing disruptive patients. Ability to use a problem solving process to develop and evaluate a plan of care.
Capable of sitting, standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, hearing, twisting, seeing, speaking, grasping and or manipulating objects and climbing. Capable of lifting and pushing up to 75 lbs. Capable of carrying up to 50 lbs. Capable of managing physically aggressive patients.

·Bachelor's Degree required with at least:
·Two years of college level coursework in related discipline required
·OR four years direct experience in Adolescent or Child Inpatient/Residential Psychiatry
·OR four years day treatment/Outpatient Psychiatric Program/community mental health exp
·OR combination of two above equating to four years of experience

·One year experience in related field or relevant experience
·OR two years child development experience if no psychiatry experience
