PURPOSE OF POSITION: To perform routine laboratory tests related to clinical cytogenetics and molecular genetics for the Human Genetics division of a Medical Center dedicated to the care of infants, children, and adolescents.

Responsibilities
·Log In:
Perform log-n and accessioning according to requisition, test ordered, and information received, using laboratory. LIS system and procedures. Identify requisition errors and sample inconsistencies. Communicate with appropriate staff when information is needed to successfully accession a test.
·General Genetic Techniques:
Perform DNA and RNA isolation on various sample types including blood, bone marrow, cytobrushes, amniocytes, fibroblasts and cultured cells utilizing automated and non-utomated nucleic acid isolation techniques. Perform molecular genetic techniques including but not limited to viral PCR tests, quantitation of nucleic acids by spectrophotometric methods, polymerase chain reaction, restriction digestion, staining of DNA in gels and gel imaging by digital camera acquisition. Proficient at a level 3 competency in one cytogenetic test system which includes Fluorescent In Situ Hybridization (FISH), Chromosome Analysis, and Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) / parative genomic hybridization (CGH) Analysis.
·Analysis Interpretation and Reporting:
Learn basic chromosome morphology and perform chromosome analysis and photography on Cytovision imaging system. Begin learning molecular analysis techniques to analyze tests and produce data for interpretation. Use various genetic reference materials to interpret data generated during analysis of genetic tests. Can prepare test reports for review by Genetic Counselors and Directors of the Genetic Laboratories.
·General Laboratory Duties:
Perform routine cleaning and maintenance procedures for laboratories. Assist in ordering and maintaining inventory of supplies and their storage. Ensure that work areas are organized and present a safe, accessible, effective and efficient environment for employees.
·Professional Knowledge:
Sitting for certification exam within 18 months of service is strongly encouraged. Work to increase overall genetics knowledge through use of laboratory and hospital Continuing Education programs, presentations, literature and meetings.
·Quality Assurance/Quality Control:
Perform routine quality control and quality assurance procedures to assure maintenance of laboratory testing standards. Procedures include recording temperatures, pH, CO2 and humidity levels, supply audits, etc

Required:
·Bachelor's Degree in Biology or related field
