REQUIRED SKILLS: Effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to relate to diverse age and demographic backgrounds. Mathematical ability sufficient to interpret orders, measure ingredients and perform complex mathematical calculations.
High School Diploma or equivalent.
Minimum 2 years of experience performing Nutrition Care Assistant or related functions.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Formula Preparation: Verifies new or questionable formula orders with a registered dietitian for accuracy and obtains standardized recipes as needed. Prepares formula accurately according to established written formulations, following pre-established Formula preparation procedures and adhering to quality control standards. Uses correct technique to measure solids and liquids. Stores prepared formula properly until delivery to the patient areas. Delivers prepared formulas to patient area refrigerators. Maintains daily records of patient profiles or updates computerized patient profile regarding infant formula orders including allergy information. Utilizes COE and E-Kids computer systems to update patient formula orders, prepares labels and production lists, and communicate with allied health care personnel regarding formula orders. Completes daily batch records for prepared formulas. Maintains a daily log of refrigeration and heating equipment temperatures in the formula room. Removes unused, previously prepared formula from patient area refrigerators 24 hours after preparation time and discards according to an established protocol.
Inventory and Supplies:Inventories and maintains sufficient formula room stock. Completes daily tally or census sheets indicating formulas prepared. Inventories all formula, sterile water, glassware, bottles and other supplies, as needed to maintain adequate supply levels. Orders products and supplies and notifies supervisor of any shortages. Orders infant formulas and enteral feeding products from and approved and reliable vendor. Checks expiration dates on products. Reports to supervisor when short-dated products received from vendor. Follows procedures for formula recalls at the direction of supervisor.
Sanitation in preparation area: Cleans and sanitizes all work surfaces in the formula preparation room before and after each formula preparation. Cleans utensils/equipment/storage areas used in the infant formula preparation room according to established procedures. Follows aseptic technique. Follows department and infection control policies regarding formula handling. When appropriate, prepares samples for bacteria check according to established protocol. Maintains daily appearance according to departmental guidelines. Reports to appropriate supervisor if ill.
Quality Assurance: Double checks standardized recipes and obtains verification of those formulations with the registered dietitian responsible for the nutritional care of that patient. Checks equipment for proper operation and reports problems to the appropriate supervisor. Communicates with patient care unites regarding problems with formula orders, formula storage or administration. Prepares and maintains patient care unit batch or log sheets of prepared and dispensed formulas. Assists with monthly quality assurance report and production summaries as assigned.
Training:Assists in training other employees in formula preparation and proper handling techniques as needed.
